Preventative Measures for Clean Fuels
1. Inspect, inspect, and reinspect your fuel and tanks.  Discover a potential problem prior to it developing into a significant or catastrophic problem.

2. Control water from entering your tank.  Check drainage around tanks.  Check tank top attachments where water might seep into tanks.  If not tight, reseal.  Check to be sure caps seal tightly.   If not, replace.   Remove water from tank top manholes (not by pulling a plunger to allow water to drain into the tank).

3. Check for water inside the tank.  Water paste and tank bottom samplers can be used for this. If there is water in the fuel, check the pH.   If the pH is 7 or lower, this indicates a corrosion problem (probably MIC related).  Remove as much water from the fuel as possible.

4. Routinely check and change fuel filters. Drain the fluid within the filter cartridge into a glass jar.  Observe quality.  Clean and cut open the filter.  Observe quality. 

5. Minimize condensation within tanks by keeping the tanks topped with fuel.  NFPA recommends that fuel storage tanks be kept as full as possible at all times, but never less than 50 percent of tank capacity.  Invest in low cost hydrophobic vent filters to remove moisture from the air as the tank vents. 

6. Check delivered fuel.  Observe quality and clarity.  Check for free and entrained water in the delivered product.
 
7. Routinely sample and test for fuel bugs and fuel stability. Use a sample retriever that allows for bottom tank and mid-point tank sampling.  Observe the fuel - it should be clean and bright.

8. Use a fuel biocide as a routine preventive measure and whenever bug infestation is identified.

9. Use a fuel stabilizer – antioxidants with corrosion inhibitors - if fuel is stored for extended periods of time.

10.  Do all of the above and record your observations, developing a baseline of information that can be utilized to spot abnormalities, guide your decision process, and share information with FuelTs … your Fuel Treatment Specialist.
